Bilateral diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Latvia

The Republic of Latvia recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the 8th of January 1992. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on the 11th of January 1994.

The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Latvia was opened in 2005.

The Embassy of the Republic of Latvia in the Republic of Azerbaijan was opened in 2006.

 

Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Latvia have developed at a high level in all areas. The political dialogue between the two countries continues through regular reciprocal visits at the highest possible levels.

 

On the 16th to the 18th of July 2017, a delegation led by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, paid an official visit to the Republic of Latvia.

 

On the 16th to the 17th of March 2017, the President of the Republic of Latvia, Mr Raimonds Vējonis, paid a working visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

 

On the 12th to the 13th of December 2019, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, paid an official visit to the Republic of Latvia.

 

On the 12th to the 14th of February 2017, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, paid an official visit to Azerbaijan

 

Inter-parliamentary relations

 

The Working Group for Azerbaijani-Latvian Inter-Parliamentary Relations has been established and operates in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The group is chaired by Kamran Bayramov.

The Latvian Saeima, the parliament of the Republic of Latvia, has a group to promote co-operation with the Azerbaijani Parliament. The group is headed by Roman Naudinsh.

 

Contractual and legal framework

 

In total, forty-three documents were signed between Azerbaijan and Latvia.

 

Economic co-operation

 

In general, forty-seven Latvian companies operate in Azerbaijan in the fields of construction, services, industry, communications, transport, trade, banking and insurance.

On the 3rd of October 2005, the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation was established between the two countries. So far, the commission has held 7 meetings.
